Yes Sir....that's my baby!!!!

Thursday, September 04, 2008

There's been a friendly debate over the years on which parent he takes after. When he was younger, people said he was obviously his mother's child. His skin is fair, he doesn't tan and can burn quickly. He loves to read and he writes well. He has an interest in many subjects and is very knowledgeable about several of them. He loves his family and he is a good friend. When he was small, he spent most of his time with his mother, of course. He liked to take baths and cuddle with a good book. He loves animals and is kind to them.

He was an only child but has assured his parents that he didn't mind being the only child during his growing up years. His parents often wonder if they should have tried harder to have a sibling for him to be close with during his lifetime. Whatever the case, he is very content to spend time alone and always finds something to do.

When he was in his first years of school, he spent his afternoons with his father. His father got home from work about 2:30 P.M. They would watch TV or do errands until it was time to pick up his mother from her job. On his father's weekends off, he often was allowed to stay up late so he and his Dad could watch tv together. Once cable was in the house; he soon saw and heard his first Westerns and became nearly as fond of them as his father.

He also heard the F word for the first time watching The Wild Geese one night with his father. He was told ...."don't tell your Mother" ......and he didn't!

He and his father watched this movie more than once!

He also watched so many John Wayne movies that he and his father could recite the dialog. It was not unusual for his mother to hear the two of them saying the lines over the voices of the actors during the movie, The Train Robbers.

In fact, his mother thought she knew all the words after hearing the two of them say them over and over and over again.

He loved to read about airplanes, war ships, the space program and of course, Star Wars was big in his life.
....and STAR TREK....

He often was given large coffee table sized books which he collected and still has to this day.

Once, when he was in the company of adults including an uncle who had served in the Navy; they were watching some aircraft flying overhead. As the adults were discussing which aircraft it was; he answered quickly...giving them the stats on the aircraft and how he knew which it was due to the shape of the wings and markings. One of the adults was very impressed that this child knew so much about the subject.

He was also self-educated about the NASA Space program and could give all kinds of facts and dates about every mission.

When the Rubik's cube first came out, years ago, one of his teachers had a very long formula on solving it. He managed to memorize the whole formula. When an uncle challenged him; he put the cube colors in order in under 2 minutes. He taught himself some magic and card tricks. He was always reading or playing with his Legos, Matchbox cars or building houses out of playing cards.

As he grew, he became more like his father in his build, his mannerisms, his stance. Once he was at K-Mart with his father. They had separated to look in different areas. He soon went looking for his father and told him that he thought he was being followed by a very large man. He was concerned about why his man seems to be staring at him and why this man was always around him. As he was telling his father about this situation, the man came around the corner and said. " ....I knew that kid had to be yours as soon as I saw him. He looks just like you did in high school!. The man had been locker mates with his father and had been in the same home room in high school.

Another time, the father and son had gone on a shakedown cruise with the uncle in the Navy. They were allowed to spend a couple of days and nights on a newly commissioned Navy aircraft carrier. When they returned, they showed all the pictures to his mother. As she was looking at one which showed several hundred people standing on the carrier with their backs to the camera; .... She said. "I can tell you which one is our son". The father was sure she could not because all the people were only about 1/4 inch tall. She insisted that she knew which one was their son. They got out a magnifying glass and could see the back of the shirt the person was wearing. The son said that was the shirt he had on. When asked how she knew, she said...."because from behind, the two of you have the same way of standing, the same shape in your shoulders and a mother knows these things."

So, now this only child has grown. He is a man, a son, a husband, a father and a grandfather. He is a dispatcher for the Police and Fire Depts in our area. He takes his job very seriously and is dedicated to being sure all the people who work for the Police and Fire Departments are safe on his watch.

He protects his family in the same way he saw his father protect his mother and him when he lived at home. He provides for his family and is extremely proud of them. He tries to spend individual time with each of them. He is thoughtful and caring and concerned.

He like every one else...he has his days when he wants to be left alone and isn't as sociable as he is most of the time. And his father would say that trait is from his mother!!!!

He does reflect the best of each of his parents. And......he is my son. Please visit him to wish him a happy birthday on Friday, September 5th. His blogname is [email protected]

It's a big birthday and he is not sure he is happy about reaching this particular milestone in his life.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SON!!!!
