On A Clear Day, Rise And Look Around You....

Simple Abundance has been dealing with a series of essays about the five senses. All of these senses are what enrich our lives. We may not ALL have ALL five individually but for those of us who do....it makes our personal world a much richer place to be.

In the essay entitled A TASTE FOR LIVING, the book discusses that TASTE is the younger sister of SMELL. "Did you know that a child has more taste buds than adults who have 10,000 taste sensors in the mouth...mostly on the tongue but also on the palate, pharynx and tonsils."

These taste buds wear out as we age. They regenerate every 10 days or so but as we enter middle age, they don't regenerate as quickly. "The word "taste" comes from the English word tasten which means to touch and test. The primary tastes we encounter are, sweet, sour, bitter or salty. I bet there isn't one of us that doesn't love the combination of sweet and sour in a meal or sweet and salty.

The book suggests that we explore our taste by trying out unusual ethnic restaurants or markets to experience some new taste sensations.

But the biggest message in this essay was about spices. Are you as guilty as I am? Do you have lots of little bottles and containers of spices that are so old you can't even remember when you bought them? Do you have baking power in the original metal container? If you do, it is OLD!!!! If you can find the price tag on the container and it is less than $1.....THROW IT OUT.....IT IS OLD!

Get rid of those old spices. Replace them with spices that you will use up in a reasonable amount of time. The flavor and productivity of those old baking powders, sodas and spices is gone. We need to rewaken our taste buds and we need fresh spices to do so. The same goes for the flour and yeast products we have stuffed into the back of our cupboards. Give yourself a treat and start replacing those old, worn out flavorless items.

BON APPETIT!

The next essay is entitled ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER.

Many of us have grown up with a need for glasses or contacts. I, personally, have worn glasses since I was in 5th grade. It is part of my normal life, I feel like the glasses are part of me.

"Pablo Picasso said " If only we could pull out our brain and use only our eyes we would be amazed at the world around us."

"Susan Abbott is an artist who has the unique ability of capturing a moment in time with exquisite detail in a woman's daily life. It is like a photograph. Artists hold sacred the sense of sight."

Georgia O'Keeffe said "In a way nobody sees a flower really, it is so small, we haven't the time....and to see takes time, like a friend takes time."

That quote is "an unrelenting truth" "Most of us have been given a miraculous gift - the ability to see - but we don't take the time to do more than glance around."

So today, "take a good look around your world -- your family, your home, your pets, your friends and co-workers and strangers. Smile at the people you meet because you can see them. Never forget the gift of vision was so important that God created Light. When the Creator was finished with each day's work, he "saw that it was good. We need to see how good it is, too."

I CAN see clearly now......and that IS a simple pleasure.
