addiction or just a hobby?
Tuesday, October 02, 2007

I AM NOT A GAMBLING ADDICT! And in no way, am I making fun of those who might have an addiction. I do realize how easily it could be to become so involved in playing the slot machines that it would be harmful to my health, my marriage, my life and my family.

I have written about playing the slot machines for a few posts....mostly just for the fun of discussing it and what my husband and I have been doing to entertain ourselves. We do realize just how much we can afford to throw away in the slot machines. We also realize that it is truly a game of Chance and there is no way we would really make any money on it. I understand that some people like to play roulette or poker or craps and that it may actually take some brains to figure out what to play ....unlike slot machines that are computerized to select certain pictures or figures as soon as you push the play button.

I decided one way to get tired really fast of playing slot machines was to play the slot games that are free online. Then, I found a CD at Target yesterday. It has 23 slot machine games plus Texas Hold em, poker, craps and other casino games....all for the cost of under $10.00!

I installed it in less than 10 minutes and have played most of the slot machine games already. I like to get to the bonus to figure out what needs to be done to win bonus points!. I really don't care about the money that much so I decided this would give me some fun and not cost me any money. It isn't QUITE the same as actually putting the $5 bills into a machine but the outcome is much better!

Over the many years we have been married, my husband and I have always worked hard for our money and been careful how we spent it. We didn't have much when we first started out so necessitites were always number one.

As we progressed through our married years, we did find some things that we enjoyed doing. For a few years, we got involved in the oil painting parties. The representative brought in several oil paintings on canvas and when you purchased the painting, you also purchased a frame. It was like Tupperware for the walls! Anyhow, we bought a lot of oil paintings...it wasn't too expensive, the pictures were nice and we spent time with other young couples. After a few months, we got tired of the paintings and ran out of wall space so we moved on to other interests.

For a few more years, we went to craft fairs and purchased some items. You can find nearly any theme at a craft fair and it doesn't take very long to fill up the rest of the walls in your home.

The next phase was collecting SOMETHING! Teddy bears ....

Precious Moment figurines

or cabbage patch dolls

We didn't have a daughter so we didn't get involved in any of those collection frenzies. I did finally decide to collect hen and rooster figurines because my husband wants something he could look for as a gift for me from time to time.

I have collected for so many years that frankly, I am sick of the whole collection. I must be at the age where I just don't want the clutter around any more. Sure, there are a few pieces that I love and might keep but overall, I don't have a real desire for most of it. And where do you sell it? Or should I take it to GoodWill?

So...anyway, the reason for this blog was to say that I think the slot machine frenzy was just our current "thing to do". No biggie! No real problem! Just a way to find something fun to do for a few weeks.

Just like going on a cruise ship. We have done about 5 so far. We have one scheduled for January, 2008 and then, I expect, we will be tired of doing that and looking for something else to attract our interest.
